Automotive Lighting: What Kinds are There?

Cars and trucks, SUVs and vans -- they all come from the factory with all sorts. The commonest: headlights, daytime running lights or "DRLs", and taillights. Not so common: fog lights and specialty lights. Whatever lighting your vehicle has, though, it usually has more than one use.

What Each Does

A headlight, for instance, can function as both a low-beam and a high-beam. You use low beams during most driving. You use high beams when it's extremely dark; they're brighter and they shine wider. You can also use headlights as hazard lights. You may call them "flashers," but either way, they warn other drivers of danger nearby. They can also tell them you need help.

DRLs and tail lighting, however, tell drivers in front of and behind where and how far away you are. Your "blinkers" signal a turn or lane change and your brake lights indicate slowdowns and stops.

Depending on the make and model you drive, you may have other types of lighting. Fog lighting, for one, shines low and brightly in bad weather. Specialty lights, on the other hand, accent exterior accessories such as license plate frames.

Headlamp or tail lamp, though, the light bulb itself will be one of three kinds.

Bulb Types

Halogen lights, you'll find in smaller vehicles. Xenon or high-intensity discharge (HID) lights, you'll find in sports cars and performance SUVs. LED lights, you'll find in newer vehicles.

When to Change Them

Replace Xenon bulbs every few years when they dim. Replace LED bulbs if their electronics or the lights themselves burn out. Replace halogen bulbs every couple years.

What Kind Your Vehicle Needs

That depends on your make, model, and body style. Choose the genuine article either way.
