The importance of car air filters can't be overestimated. Your vehicle has two of them: an engine air filter and a cabin air filter. The engine filter traps airborne particulate before it can get into your air intake and build up on other engine parts. The cabin filter catches dust and allergens before they can get into the ducts in your heating and air conditioning system and accumulate on its vents and fans.

Without air filters, that crud would wear out those parts double quick. Unfortunately, even the best ones don't last forever. If they don't otherwise degrade from age, they clog sooner or later, and that causes even more trouble. An engine air filter full of debris leads to engine problems like increased emissions, lower gas mileage, and even misfires. You can prevent all this. Just be sure to change both air filters regularly, about every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, but no more than every 30,000 miles. There are also signs you can watch for, more than just a lit Check Engine light or other warning lights on the dash, or the obvious dirty and degraded fibers. They include unusual engine noise, power loss, acceleration trouble, worsening fuel economy, and black exhaust smoke. You may also hear whistling and/or other unusual sounds in the cabin, not to mention unpleasant odors, coming from the vents.
