OEM Mopar Air Intake Systems
Your engine burns a mix of gas and oxygen to produce its power. Your fuel injectors may spray the gas into it through intake valves, but it's your air intake that draws the oxygen into its manifold to be spread among engine cylinders.
Mopar sometimes calls its OEM air intakes "induction systems," but naming aside, how they work is the same, and straightforward. Air gets pulled in through your engine air filter first. It helps remove dirt, dust, pollen, and other airborne contaminants. Relocate your intake to above a wheel well or near a fender, and it can pull in cooler air, making it a cold air intake. That cooler air is denser; therefore, the intake can draw more of it in, and that can give your engine a slight power bump.
Three parts of an induction system tell it how much air to use: a mass airflow sensor, an air metering system (which feeds back to an engine control unit or ECU), and an oxygen sensor. Some vehicles have several sensors. They determine the proper air levels in your exhaust, and that tells your engine how to adjust how much fuel it burns.
When your air intake works the way it should, your engine keeps running as well as it can. When it doesn't, you'll start to see signs. The most obvious is a lit Check Engine light, indicating engine performance problems. Induction system failure, on the other hand, has two symptoms: fast engine rev when parked or in neutral and idling a lot faster or slower than normal. Luckily, our auto parts store has the best parts for a repair project: genuine OEM.
