It may not have occurred to you just how many uses your vehicle's factory headlights have.

You likely already know what low-beams do. They're made for lighting the way during everyday driving. High-beams, though, shine wider, illuminating the road and your surroundings when it's very dark and there's no traffic coming.

You may also be familiar with their functions as hazard lights or flashers, too. These inform other drivers of problems or a dangerous situation nearby. But did you also know that they can assist you in getting help by signaling that you're in distress? Some brands' higher trim levels even have fog lights, low-glare headlights that brighten your driving environment much better when the weather takes a turn for the worse.

Whatever your make and model combination has, it comes from your automaker one of three bulb types. Halogen bulbs are commonest in smaller vehicles. Since sports cars and performance vehicles have narrower headlamp housings, they usually have Xenon bulbs (also called high-intensity discharge or HID). LED bulbs, however, you can find in many newer models these days. They're low-heat and energy-efficient.

So, what headlights does your ride need, specifically? The answer may be body style-specific, but when to replace a car light bulb isn't. Change Xenon headlamps about every three years (as they weaken). Change LED headlamps if their electronics quit working, or if they burn out. Change halogen headlamps every couple of years or so.

The best you can buy for the job are genuine OEM. Mopar designs them specifically for Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and RAM models, after all. Just be sure to get the right light assembly kit to go with them.
