Oil Filters: What You Need to Know

The Parts of One and What Each Does
It contains a housing, the filter medium, and a gasket. The medium captures pollutants before they can cause engine problems, while the oil filter housing both holds the filter and connects it to the engine. When to Replace Them
Consistently, during each oil change. You can even take care of it at every other one if you prefer. Either way, it's a good idea to do it at every 3,000-mile or 3-month mark, whichever comes first.
The Signs it May Be Time
Look for:
- A loss of oil pressure
- An engine oil warning light on the dash
- General engine performance issues
Change the housing gaskets, though, if they get brittle and begin cracking, as oil can start to leak from them.

Underneath the engine compartment, usually, once you remove any applicable undertray. Otherwise, from above the bay itself. Either way, you should consult your owner's manual for more information on this.
