Car Radiators: What You Need to Know

What One Does

It's simple: it helps keep your engine from overheating.

How One Works

That's a little more complex. The process starts with coolant. This fluid has the most important job in the process: absorbing the heat your engine produces as it runs. It does it flowing back and forth between an inlet and outlet with help from a water pump, moving through radiator hoses along the way.

As the fluid travels, it gets compressed by a radiator cap. This helps it take on as much heat as possible. The fins every radiator core has then expel the collected heat, and a fan scatters it into the air nearby. The result: your engine works better and lasts longer.

When a radiator goes bad, though, it can cause everything from heating and air conditioning malfunctions to overheats and engine failure. Luckily, the symptoms of radiator problems are easy to spot.

Signs One's Failing

They include:

  • Fin damage
  • Unusual engine noises
  • Coolant turning to sludge
  • A sweet, syrupy smell (ethylene glycol, usually indicative of a coolant leak)

If you think your radiator is approaching failure, check your vehicle's temperature gauge. It's the best way to tell if the engine's running hot. Then, do a thorough inspection. If radiator replacement is necessary, avoid the aftermarket; get your hands on the genuine article.
